The Cursed Pilot

A Cursed Survival Challenge in
No Man’s Sky

“It wasn’t the ship. It was you.”

They told you not to activate that signal. Not to touch that relic. But you did.

Now every ship you fly, no matter how it was obtained—crashed, bought, or gifted—will betray you the moment its landing struts touch a planetary surface. Engines dead. Controls locked. It refuses to fly again.

You are the problem. Something inside you corrupts the systems around you. And the only way to force a ship to fly again is to “infuse” it with the remains of a fallen Minotaur Sentinel.

But that’s just survival. To truly lift the curse, you must construct a vessel with your own hands—a Hauler built from salvaged parts, bearing your mark, and no other.

Ruleset

Custom Game Mode:Extreme Permadeath – Set all difficulty sliders to maximum
Recipes and Blueprints:Learnable
Tutorial Missions:Disabled

Forbidden Actions:

  • NO Cheating: No Duping, Glitching or Save Scumming
  • Can not follow story lines
  • You may not summon ships
  • You may not bypass planetary landing restrictions via tricks or exploits
  • You may not use Sentinel Pillars to disable Sentinels
  • You may not claim limited-time, Twitch, Expedition, or Quicksilver rewards

Allowed Actions:

  • You may use the Starter Ship
  • You may purchase ships or claim crashed ones
  • You may freely use stations, trade terminals, teleporters, and the Anomaly
  • You may build and use bases to support your journey

The Curse Mechanic

  • Any time a ship lands on a planetary surface, it becomes cursed (unresponsive).
  • The curse activates every time the ship lands on a planet—not just once.
  • The ship cannot take off again until the curse is lifted.
  • Landing on space stations, freighters, or the Anomaly does not trigger the curse.

NOTE:
Ship summoning is not allowed.
As the ship refuses to respond to you, you cannot summon it.
You must return to the physical location of the landed ship to board it again.

To restore flight capability:

  • Defeat a Sentinel Minotaur.
  • Collect the Hardframe Engine from the loot.
  • Delete the Hardframe Engine from the ship’s inventory to simulate “infusion” into the ship.
  • Players may carry only one Hardframe Engine at a time (to prevent stockpiling and ensure each reset requires a new fight).

NOTE:
Infusion is a self-imposed rule used for this challenge and not an in-game mechanic. It’s a roleplay element designed to add structure and progression.

Do NOT use Sentinel Pillars to deactivate sentinels. Doing so will prevent you from being able to summon another Hardframe and could trap your ship. If you accidentally defeat all waves during a battle, you must leave the planet immediately as the curse can no longer be cleansed there.

Additional Clarifications:

  • You may teleport between bases, but if your ship is left behind on a planet, it remains cursed and unresponsive until you return and cleanse it.
  • You may use the Anomaly, but may not claim Twitch rewards, Expedition rewards, or Quicksilver merchant items during this challenge.
  • If you accidentally clear all Sentinel waves and disable them, you’ll need to reset the situation.
    • If you have a Hardframe Engine, infuse it and leave the system immediately.
    • If you do not have a Hardframe Engine, save in your ship and restart the game to restore Sentinel activity.

Challenge Objective:

Break the Curse

  1. Find/purchase/claim Haulers, and salvage and collect:
    • All essential Hauler components (Engines, body, Cockpit…) An S-Class Reactor module (from ship vendor)
  2. Use these to construct your own Hauler
  3. Fly that Hauler to a Dissonant Planet and land it
    • Optional: Rename the ship to “CurseBreaker”
    • Landing the completed, self-built Hauler on a Dissonant Planet breaks the curse and completes the challenge.

NOTE: Corvette ships are not allowed in this run, as they make this challenge futile.
